August Pinehurst Summer Retreat

Pinehurst Resort exists in its own Sandhills paradise - a legendary golf destination where pine-scented fairways roll through America's cradle of golf and Donald Ross's genius lives on every green. An hour south of Raleigh in the heart of North Carolina, this is where golf architecture was perfected and where major championships have been decided for over a century.

Here's what makes this place legendary: Pinehurst is home to Course No. 2, host of more single-site championships than any course in America including three U.S. Opens and two U.S. Women's Opens, its restored Ross greens and natural wire grass creating the purest test in golf. Add in Gil Hanse's brilliantly crafted No. 4 winding through the pines, the strategic gem of No. 8 with its risk-reward scenarios, and cap your evenings at The Cradle - Tom Doak's magical par-3 short course perfect for sunset play - and you've got four days of championship golf that honors over 125 years of Pinehurst tradition. We're staying at The Holly Inn, the resort's original 1895 Victorian landmark, with full-service breakfast and lunch included and complete access to nine championship courses, the acclaimed Spa, putting courses, and the vibrant Pinehurst Village just steps away. This is Sandhills golf at its absolute finest.

The Courses

The Cradle - Tom Doak's par-3 wonderland is pure joy compressed into nine reversible holes that can be played in under an hour. Opened in 2017, this short course captures everything great about golf—creativity, variety, and fun—without any of the slog. Holes range from 55 to 145 yards across Doak's imaginative terrain, perfect for sunset matches, family rounds, or sharpening your short game after tackling the big courses. This is where you'll want to end your days with a cold drink and some friendly competition.

Pinehurst No. 2 - Donald Ross's 1907 masterpiece remains the gold standard of American golf architecture. Restored to Ross's original vision by Coore & Crenshaw, the course now features natural sandy areas replacing rough, crowned greens that demand precision, and strategic options on every shot. Host to three U.S. Opens, two U.S. Women's Opens, and countless other championships, No. 2 rewards creativity and course management over pure power. The key here is keeping the ball below the hole—miss on the wrong side and you'll discover why these greens are legendary.

Pinehurst No. 4 - Gil Hanse's 2018 creation winds through towering longleaf pines with wider fairways than No. 2 but equally fascinating green complexes. The routing feels natural and flowing, with dramatic elevation changes and strategic bunkering that rewards bold play. This is modern architecture at its finest—thoughtful, beautiful, and supremely playable while still presenting plenty of challenge for better players.

Pinehurst No. 8 - Tom Fazio's design plays through classic Sandhills terrain with strategic variety that keeps you thinking all round. The course features excellent risk-reward holes, particularly on the par-5s, and some of the property's most dramatic green sites. While not as severe as No. 2, the demands here are real—this is championship-caliber golf that rewards smart strategy and solid execution.

More Details

  • Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is your gateway - it's about an hour's drive south to Pinehurst Resort through the North Carolina Sandhills. This is a smooth, straightforward trip that gets easier once you leave the Raleigh suburbs behind. RDU is a well-run mid-sized airport with plenty of flight options from major cities, so you'll avoid the nightmare of massive hubs while still having good connections.

  • You have several options - rent a car for maximum flexibility (useful if you want to explore the Sandhills region or make any off-property trips), use a ride-share service, arrange a private car service through the resort, or take advantage of Pinehurst's own shuttle service that runs from RDU at around $100 each way and departs on the top of every hour. Here's the thing: once you're at Pinehurst, everything you need is on property. The Holly Inn sits right in the heart of Pinehurst Village, so the shops, restaurants, and that classic New England-style village atmosphere are all within an easy walk. Between nine championship courses, world-class dining, the Spa, and the village itself, you could easily skip the rental car and never feel landlocked - the resort has everything covered.
